Tailoring is one of the oldest professions in the world, that has passed from one generation to another. But all of that has changed in the last 20 years.

Tailors must have a vivid imagination and lots of patience while making clothes. The good tailor earns his good reputation from his costumers. That’s why the old famous tailors disappeared except for a few ones, because the current generation doesn’t prefer going to tailors. Tailors were famous in the 60’s and 70’s as most people at that time preferred clothes made specially for them, but in the 90’s the ready-made clothes became so famous that’s why most of the tailors vanished.

Abass Soliman one of the oldest tailors in Egypt, mentions that he got a great desire for working in tailoring and that he has started this career by transforming his old trousers to modern ones easily, by using his wife’s sewing machine. His friends felt amazed when they saw him wearing these pants, most of them; especially, the villagers who asked him to make pants for them.

He also added that he got 10 pounds for the first men’s suit he made while it’s price now is around 600 pounds. Also, the average price at that time for making trousers was from 1 to 1.5 pounds and the blouse for 1.5. pounds. In 1986, he started to make women’s clothes and after one year he started to make evening dresses.

Moreover, Mr. Sayed, another famous tailor started his career when his father forced him to leave his education journey after finishing his primary school to find a suitable job for himself. So, he took him to Mr. Hassan Tantawi, who has a famous tailor shop downtown, to give him all his experience in tailoring.
