Who're the "khatba"?

It may sound weird but yes, this profession brought happiness to many women. "Khatba” or the matchmaker first appeared in the "mamluk" era and it became popular so fast, as at that time many people needed her services. She was showing pictures of brides to the groom’s family. Her role was to connect the families and what made the “khatba” trusted, is keeping secrets and being honest. Simply, she played the role of social media nowadays and she was the link for communication between both families.



When and where it appeared?

This profession appeared in low and middle classes; it was rare to find the “khatba” in the upper class because they tend to go to parties and gatherings to know each other. Poor people go to a matchmaker because they would rather abide by their cultural traditions.


How the "khatba" does her job?

Many women tend to bring her as she was the only option. The “khatba” took gifts from the bride and groom for helping them know each other, and those gifts depended on their social class. She was showing the family of the groom pictures of brides and for sure, the bride family knew and accepted that. The "khatba" can be still found in some Arab communities until today. For example, Khalid a young Jordanian man who had been searching for a bride for almost one year, but he didn’t find a suitable one, said that he’s so grateful for the “khatba” for helping him find his lifetime partner.


Its success secret
